The lengthy making process normally begins on the potters wheel. Pieces are often altered - either directly on the wheel or when the clay has stiffened slightly - to begin to form the finished shape. The eventual colours and textures of the completed pieces are determined by the application of slips. These are liquid clays with additions of minerals and colouring oxides which react with the salt and heat of the kiln giving a variety of finished effects.

While the majority of Mandy’s work is fired in the wood fired kiln, electric and gas fired kilns are also used at various stages of the process.
